Steps to Reading Proficiency
Published in Hardcover by Wadsworth Publishing (January, 1900)
Authors: Peter Elais Sotiriou, Anne G. Phillips, and Peter Elias Sotiriou
Average review score:

A "must read"...if you want to be a masterful reader!
Reading has been...and will always be...my passion, and I read voraciously. Hence, I always scout for and pursue high-performance reading techniques. It is now my lifelong learning pursuit. I approach them with an open mind as my primary focus is on what works for me, with playing, exploring and experimenting as my evaluation tools.

This is one book, I must say, contains the best and most comprehensive collection of text organisational (writing) patterns I have seen so far. In a nut shell, understanding and mastering text organisational (writing) patterns at the onset after your initial preview allow you to navigate the given text at very high speeds.

In total, this book introduces eleven (11) patterns:

- enumeration pattern (listing);
- time sequence;
- example pattern;
- cause & effect pattern;
- problem & solution pattern;
- compare & contrast pattern;
- spatial pattern;
- definition pattern;
- process pattern;
- classification pattern;
- description pattern;

In any kind of reading, a quick preview is imperative. This book also introduces you to a variety of preview techniques, just like any other reading technique books.

Understanding the text organisational (writing) patterns makes your preview much more efficient and effective.

All information has shape. Just take a close look at the word INFORMATION. The root word is FORM. So, if you want to read fast, you must learn to shape or form your understanding quickly. If you can see this FORM at the onset, it becomes much more easier for you to understand how the information in the given text is organised. With this understanding, it become easier and also faster for you to pick out the key ideas or details.

The author has done an excellent job in illustrating all the eleven text organisation (writing) patterns. There are also a lot of reading exercises or practices for you to play, explore and experiment with the patterns. They are really worth the cover price for the book.

I teach kids and teens as well as adults how to read at very high speeds. In other words, I help them to survive...and thrive in...the information overload! From my own personal and professional experiences, the purpose of reading is to GATHER INFORMATION...IDEAS to be more precise. I always advise them ...using Pareto' Law...that 80% of the meaning of any given paragraph are often captured in only 20% of the words...these are the key ideas! (In fact, I have read from somewhere...an empirical study...that 4 to 11 % of any given text contains the key ideas!)

Knowing how to discern text organisational (writing) patterns in the first instance gives you the turbo boost to locate the key ideas very quickly and eventually navigate the reading texts at very high speeds.

If you combine these reading techniques with mindmapping or using graphic organisers and/or other visual tools, your ability to organise and synthesise ideas...and generating insights...from all your reading become very powerful.

So, if you want to be a masterful reader, just like me...this book is a must read!

This bible truly reaches out to the younger generation.
This bible has created a hunger and excitement in my youth group. It touches on subjects familiar to this generation. As a leader I learned so much from the "Hot Topic" sections dealing with problems and sensitive subjects of this generation. If you're buying for a group make sure each person receives one. The demand for this bible among my group has been unbelievable. The devotionals added to each book of the bible are great for starting conversations and introducing themes. Overall, this bible has been a "GOD-SEND". No teenager should grow up without it.

Best Bible Ever!!!
I'm a 13-year-old, and I was looking for a cool teen bible to read, so that I could understand it a little better. I found this one, and started reading it. It's the best bible ever made for teens!! I can't see how it can get any better! the side notes help me understand it more, and I love reading the bible now! If you are looking for a friendly Bible that makes God's word more clear, get this bible!!

A great book for teens
This is a great book for teens.This teen study helps me get threw hard times in my life as a teen.I think ever teen should have this bible,It will help them with there everyday problems.For example: drugs,dating,and other situations.This book has helped me so much with my life.I changed so much would you would never know me as the same person before I started read this study bible.What really inspired me was the part when they talked about stuff that teens deal with ever day.IT also is very cool looking and it has alot of bright colors and it speaks clear to a teenager so they will be able to understand.THIS TEEN STUDY BIBLE IS WORTH THE MONEY, IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

The coolest teen Bible you'll find
This is a very cool Bible for teens and I wish I had owned one of these when I was a teen! I looked at a number of Bibles designed for teenagers before settling on the "Teen Study Bible" for our church youth group. Everything about this Bible is simply cool. Little things, like the chapter numbers or the page numbers, have a cool hip design to them. There are pull-out quotes and "quizzer' questions that highlight important passages. The best thing about the Teen Study Bible is that it takes the Word of God to a level that teens can not only relate to, but understand and not only understand, but understand how the scriptures apply to their lives. "Dear Sam" letters address issues that teens face with Godly advice, for instance. Other parts have entire pages dedicated to specific topics like Prayer, Self Image and Dating.
Quite frankly, this is a fun Bible. It's colorful, visually appealing and is cool enough for teens to throw into their book bags and take with them. I highly recommend it for any teen.

Rapid Recovery from Back and Neck Pain: A Nine-Step Recovery Plan
Published in Paperback by Health Advisory Group, LLC (01 November, 2002)
Author: Fred Amir
Average review score:

Not what I hoped
First, let me say I appreciate Fred Amir's effort. He was in agony for 25 months and took the time to share his experiences with the general public in the hopes of helping other TMS sufferers as well. It appears he has helped many people, too. For that, I thank him.

That said, I had to order this book blind...and have been subsequently disappointed. Though I found some of his tips interesting, by and large, I have not gained much from his nine steps in terms of short-term or long-term relief. During my most recent TMS attack, I perused his book and employed all his techniques with an open mind. However, they did not seem to help at all. In the end, I resorted back to rereading Dr. Sarno's book again, which seemed to help more. You see, when I read Dr. Sarno's book, I really feel like he knows what he is talking about. His writing style exudes knowledge and wisdom, so it's easy to respect and trust his thoughts and ideas. However, Fred Amir's writing style is a little too gushing for me. Many sections read like an infomercial "This worked for me! Just wait until you see what it can do for you!" It's simply overdone and in some ways infantile, so it's hard for me to have the same confidence in his ideas as I do in Dr. Sarno's. Ironically, I silently wonder if Dr. Sarno does not feel the same way. Fred Amir acknowledges Dr. Sarno's help in proofreading the manuscript for this book, but nowhere does Dr. Sarno endorse Fred's ideas. Just something to think about...

Like so many others, while Dr. Sarno's book has brought a sense of relief to my mind and back, what it hasn't done is be able to help me make a permanent recovery from TMS. Since first learning I suffer from TMS in 1999, I have had two SEVERE episodes, so severe that I was literally incapable of standing for 72 hours following each of the attacks. Because I know I suffer from TMS, I can (and usually do) rid myself of TMS-related pain within two weeks following an attack. Nonetheless, I would like to rid myself of attacks all together. This is what I was hoping Fred Amir's book would help me do. Alas, it has not.

In conclusion, it is not my intention to disparage Fred's book. I... For those of you out there who suffer from recurrent back pain like me, I know you're looking for that magical solution. Unfortunately, while I was truly hoping this book would be it, it is not. At least not for me. Good luck to all of you as you work against this sinister pain.

AMAZING -- It really works!
My husband was extremely athletic... hiking, running, tennis, biking, surfing. Then all of a sudden he had extreme joint pain and muscle fatigue that progressed to the point where he had trouble walking. The doctors diagnosed him with ten different illnesses but no treatments were working. He started reading Amir's book and before he had even finished half of it, he went for a one hour walk and went swimming and diving. What I've heard about people feeling better WHILE they're reading it is not a joke or exaggeration. The book is remarkable and can apply to anyone who's suffering from pain -- it's not limited to back and neck pain. In addition, it seems like it has a cliff notes version of Sarno's theory, so it probably wouldn't be necessary for someone to read both books. If you have any kind of body aches and pains, I can't recommend this book enough. I'm going to buy ten copies of them just to have one on hand in case I know anyone who could benefit from it.

Fred Amir's book takes Dr. Sarno's work to new heights
The mind-body connection can and often DOES get at the cause of chronic pain. I know that it works because I have used this approach with good results for many years in my own chiropractic practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Fred Amir trained under Dr. Sarno ("Healing Back Pain, The Mind-Body Connection"), then he took the work further, and designed a Nine Step Program to implement it. To really get the most out of Dr. Sarno's program, this book helps the reader to "put it all together". People may think that a chiropractor does not want people to know this information, but it is essential to get at the cause of a problem, not just treat the symptoms. I highly recommend this book, and Dr. John Sarno's as well.

Beyond Pritikin: A Total Nutrition Program for Rapid Weight Loss, Longevity, and Good Health

The Two Week Fat Flush is Worth the Price of the Entire Book
Wow - am I psyched. I lost l5 pounds on the Fat Flush Diet and they have stayed off.. I am not hungry and not craving food like I did before. I ordered the Fat Flush Kit the author talks about in the book and that made the whole thing go much easier. I would have had to search for the Fat Burner, GLA, and vitamin/mineral preparation elsewhere. I plan to do this program every three months. You should hear the compliments. This book deserves to be a best seller because Gittleman's advice really works.

Thinner Now Than I Was at Sweet 16
The diet program in this book is sensational..I not only lost weight but I feel good and all of my friends have noticed the difference. This woman sure knows her stuff and I hope to read the rest of her books some day, too.In the meantime, I am the most svelte I have been in years and plan to stay that way with the Two Week Fat Flush Diet Plan twice a year.

I lost 50! pounds in 6 months on Beyond Pritikin
I have read every diet book out there. When I found the ivillage site and started reading the Fat Flush Board, I figured the Fat Flush Diet must be creating some pretty dramatic results. I bought Gittleman's first book BEYOND PRITIKIN to follow her program exactly and - wow - the Fat Flush started working on the very first day. I did FAT FLUSH for 6 weeks and then went to her other eating program which added in some carbs. I recommend this book to everyone. I am not hungry and have no cravings but best of all I have absolutely no desire to go back to my old eating habits.

Rapid Interpretation of EKG's, Fifth Edition
Published in Paperback by Cover Pub Co (August, 1998)
Author: Dale Dubin
Average review score:

The best EKG book
I was a 2nd yr nursing student with a interest in learning EKG's after reading the book I was the "leading expert' of EKG's in our class knowing even more than most of my teachers.What I liked about it the most was that the book was written in a very simplistic style by a person who had a great wealth of knowledge on the topic. I still reread the it occasionally. I would VERY HIGHLY recommend this book to any health care professional interested in learning more about the heart.

The best
I've worked in SICU for almost 15 years. I like surgical patients because when they "go down," it's usually pretty clear why. Frankly CCU type patients always trouble me. Like most ICU nurses I can pick out your basic abnormal beats and rhythms, but when it comes to a "designer" strip, I head next door to MICU where the "whiz kids" of the EKG monitor hang out! One of the best books I've ever come across for learning almost everything you could possibly want to know about an EKG--either the monitor or the 12-lead--is this book. It's been around at least since the 70s, when I first came across it, and it's still around. Take it from me, there's a good reason for it too. Every few years, I try to review the book again to refresh my memory on "everything you ever wanted to know about EKGs and then some," and I always enjoy the experience. I come away with a sense that I've truely gain something. The book is designed on a programed learning format--an old method perhaps, but in my opinion, still the best one--so you learn a small incriment of information, are asked a question about it and then given the answer immediately thereafter. It really sticks in the memory well, and when reviewing even up to 5 years later, I find I can get through the book rapidly even with the topics I don't regularly use. The book also containes some useful "cards" which can be reproduced and carried conveniently in ones pocket. I still have a set I had laminated for me years ago. Very definately a book worth buying, one worth keeping, and one worth reviewing from time to time.

I Came I Saw I Kicked It's a@#
From the time i started learning about EKG's, till the point and time this book was bestowed apon me i had no clue on how to read an EKG. I was always always confused. I never knew top from bottom and just tried to memorize as much as i could. That all changed the day this book came in the mail. In a matter of 4 hours i had read more than half it like a story book. The repititions of words (important ones) and relentless number of pictures that were in it made it impossible not to understand. even my mother who is an RN knows how to read EKG's now. THIS BOOK IS JUST SIMPLY OUTSTANDING IN EVERY ASPECT.

Breakthrough Rapid Reading
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall Trade (November, 1998)
Author: Peter Kump
Average review score:

The best book, I've ever seen, on speed reading!
I ran across an older version of this book years ago at a public library. At the time I had seen a few infomercials on speed reading so I decided to see if I could find a book on it. I did the initial drill and I was reading at exactly 240 words a minute, which is the average rate for a college student according to the book's graph. I went through the book and within 3 weeks I was reading at a rate of over 800 words a minute. The drills are tremendous. However, I got lazy and started putting it off. Like an athlete if you don't work out (drill) you will lose the speed. Speed reading is something I really regreted not sticking with years ago and I'm glad they through out this new edition (hardly changed, just some internet references). Within 3 weeks I've broken 1000 words a minute and I feel like I could have gotten so much more if I drilled myself harder. I've tried out Evelyn Wood's book and a photo reading book, but by far I consider this one the best. When you first learn to read with your finger it might seem strange, however with time you'll notice the speed skyrocketing and it will feel uncomfortable when you don't use it.

Excellent book for retention and recall
Only practice makes a man perfect.Peter's book is capable to increase everything-Speed Reading,Comprehension,Retention and Recall.You just need to practice drills and comprehension tips for long time.Also read-Power Reading.

Thorough, with plenty of exercises.
I started out viewing the Evelyn Wood videos (3 videos), which showed me the basic principles on speed reading. But Peter Kump's book was filled with more exercises than the three videos could have gone over with the viewer.

I found that even without the background I already had in the methods that Evelyn Wood teaches, the Peter Kump book is excellent and stands on its own. The exercises are explained thoroughly and not only does he teach rapid reading but also teaches comprehension techniques as well.

I was able to triple my speed in a matter of hours. With diligence I should be to able to increase my speed 5-fold,maybe 10-fold. The only other thing the reader should have is a timer or stop watch to help time oneself during the exercises.

Arco Triple Your Reading Speed (Triple Your Reading Speed, 3rd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Arco Pub (January, 1993)
Author: Wade E. Cutler
Average review score:

A crash course in speed reading
Overall this book helped me. I picked up the main idea the author was trying to convey early on, and I was able to finish this 200 page book in under an hour. The main idea that this book tries to teach the reader is that one can increase their reading speed by controlling their eye movements. That is, to gather information faster physically without doing as much eye work. The author uses the analogy of the eyes being like a "camera". Almost the entire book is about this concept. There are many drills to help one better their eye movement. The author also gave some other tips, such as "previewing" each chapter before you read it. There were two things that I did not like about the book. The author has the reader take several tests to measure current reading speed. I guess it is necessary, but I did not enjoy this part of this book since it was tedious and time consuming. Also the drills are a bit excessive for my taste. But I am a person that really dislikes self-tests and over-practicing. Overall I thought this book was pretty good and simple to understand. I have never explored the topic of speed reading before until I saw this book, so I have nothing to compare it to. I did, however pay less than $15 dollars to tripple my reading speed, and I think that was a very sound investment.

It does not tell you the magic solution.
If you are buying this book hoping for a certain magic solution to improve your reading speed instantly, you are wrong. It basically tells you how to train (I mean physically) your eyes to read in blocks. You need to practice, practice and practice as the author says.

If you work, this book works.
I was very skeptical about the possibility of a speed reading book actually working. I only even gave this book a chance because bieng able to speed read was worth the possible waste of time on the book (and because I could borrow it for free from my local library). After reading much of the book, I decided it was the real thing (unlike the many others I had tried), and I decided to buy my own copy. I'm now buying a copy to send to a friend.

You do have to do the drills in this book over and over; but if you're willing to put in the time, this book will give you the results.
